Shift Options

Tuesdays 12-4pm and Wednesdays 10-2pm for 18 weeks until October 26th. We give preference to volunteers that can commit to volunteering for the full 28-week CSA season, but we also accept shorter-term, month-long stints.

 

Responsibilities

New Roots Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) program is a weekly farm box subscription that connects customers in the Salt Lake community to refugee farmers cultivating local, organically grown produce. This program would not be possible without the dedicated help of our CSA workshare volunteers, who help to pack and prep CSA shares, or vegetable boxes, for distribution across the city. In exchange for 4 hours of labor each week, CSA Workshare Volunteers receive a full share of vegetables valued at $35.00.

 

Tuesday CSA Workshare Volunteer activities include but are not limited to:

Harvest and wash vegetables

Weigh, label, and pack vegetables

Weed

Miscellaneous farmer assistance (vegetable transport, hoeing, pest management, etc)

Organize walk-in cooler

Prepare materials for CSA (eg sanitize transport totes, grade tomatoes, etc)

 

Wednesday CSA Workshare Volunteer activities include but are not limited to:

Bag individual vegetable portions for CSA members 

Pack CSA shares in an assembly-line in the walk-in cooler

Tidy and sanitize walk-in cooler 

Load delivery vehicles

Prepare coolers for farmers markets

Miscellaneous farmer assistance (harvest, weed, hoe, etc)

 

Requirements

Ability to work in varying temperatures and weather conditions

Ability to perform hard physical labor, including lifting 50 lbs, squatting, bending for long periods of time, pulling and pushing.

Background check required

Available to sign up for at least 4 CSA workshare shifts for continuity

Training

New Roots will send out an email with important information prior to the first Workshare shift and will be on site to direct volunteers during the shift.
