The COVID-19 pandemic has highlighted a tremendous digital divide and the need for our staff, clients, and services to become digitally adept – that’s why we created the Digital Literacy program.
As a volunteer or intern, you will be an essential part of the creation of digital content and literacy trainings as a pathway to wellbeing and self-sufficiency for newly arrived refugees across NorCal. You will support our team directly by helping refugees access the internet, devices, and educational opportunities as they work to positively integrate into the community.
Commitment:
Volunteer: Minimum 4 hours a week for at least 4 full months
Intern: Minimum 15 hours a week for at least 4 full months or 240 hours total
As a Digital Inclusion Vol/Intern, you can expect to:
-Teach clients online through 1:1, small groups, or classes on a range of digital literacy topics, including computer basics and internet usage, or how-to-use Google, Zoom, or other critical applications.
-Assist the creation of foundational and advanced trainings to maximize digital skills in an accelerating digital age – beginner, intermediate, advanced users.
-Support NorCal program’s key staff to incorporate standard curriculum and methodologies for the delivery of high-quality online services.
Requirements:
-You are a fierce, yet compassionate learner interested in international, refugee, and human rights issues
-Must be reliable and willing to work independently and as part of a team
-Must be flexible and willing to help other teams and departments as needed
-A willingness to learn about the diverse ethnic backgrounds of our clients
Qualifications:
-Experience teaching and/or organizing discussions, groups, and initiatives involving complex topics or subjects
-Ability to communicate clearly and effectively in English; proficiency in Farsi, Spanish, Tigrinya, Pashto, Dari, Swahili preferred but any other second language is a plus.
-Excellent at distilling complexity to simple language
-A strong grip on project management, while following-through and executing on the plan
-Excellent verbal, written and interpersonal communication abilities across a diverse team of staff
