Thank you for your interest in assisting refugees and asylees in our community. By volunteering with the IRC in San Jose, you can share your unique experience and skills directly with IRC clients. Volunteer support is an integral part of the IRC's mission to provide opportunities for refugees to thrive in San Jose. 

Responsibilities

Volunteers will help meet donation needs for refugee clients. Donations are vital to help clients reach self-sufficiency. Donation Volunteers will assist in tracking in-kind donations, picking up donations as well as communication with potential donors and IRC clients. This role entails picking up large donations (i.e. couches, tables, etc.) from community donors and distributing them directly to the client or storage facility. They will also work with caseworkers to distribute donations effectively to clients.

Ideal Volunteer in this role is: 

  • Excellent interpersonal skills: ability to work effectively with partners, donors and colleagues in a cross-cultural, multi-disciplinary environment
  • Willingness to work across departments toward measurable outcomes
  • Must be comfortable with communicating with clients and community partners on the phone and in person
  • Solid organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple tasks
  • Willing to collect donations and deliver to clients or storage
  • Improve and streamline in-kind donations receiving, valuation, record keeping, reporting and acknowledgments

Time Commitment 

Minimum Commitment: 6+ hours/week for a minimum 6 months during IRC business hours Mon – Fri from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm. Longer volunteer commitments encouraged.

All volunteers must be at least 18 years of age and undergo a security background check
