Grocery Shopping Volunteer

The IRC in Atlanta—in partnership with community members like you—is committed to ensuring refugees and humanitarian parolees from Afghanistan and other crisis zones around the world integrate and thrive in their new communities here in Georgia. Please help us welcome our Afghan allies and newest neighbors by helping newly arrived families as they rebuild their lives. The grocery shopping volunteer provides transportation and helps new arrivals with grocery shopping. Email us at VolunteerATL [at] rescue.org to find out how to get involved! 

Responsibilities: 

Support families in learning how to navigate grocery stores to support their self-sufficiency  

Coach families in budget-friendly shopping strategies, while understanding the need for culturally-appropriate food items 

Provide transportation to and from the grocery store 

Requirements: 

Must be available at least 2 days per week (including weekends) between 12pm and 6pm to help newly-arrived families visit a grocery to obtain culturally appropriate foods. 

We will confirm with you 24 hours before with the anticipated schedule for the following day (shopping times may vary within the 12pm-6pm window). Unfortunately, we cannot currently provide more advanced notice.  

Be willing and able to drive personal vehicle to Alpharetta, Duluth and other areas in and near Atlanta, and potentially drive clients to and from grocery stores (if not within walking distance from their accommodations).

Virtual Connect to Success Conversation Partner

The IRC in Atlanta’s Connect to Success (C2S) program is one of the only programs in the U.S. dedicated exclusively to supporting out-of-school refugee youth ages 16 to 24. C2S addresses the unique barriers to success faced by this population through holistic support, including one-on-one coaching and group workshops. All of our programs are currently operating virtually due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
