Job Description
Under the supervision and direction of the VESL Instructor, the Vocational ESL Intern will provide English instruction and vocational training to newly arrived refugees.
Responsibilities:
- Assist refugees and Special Immigrant Visa clients with English-language instruction and other skills required to integrate into U.S. society.
- Lead group sessions and one-on-one sessions with ESL training materials
- Assist students with vocabulary and pronunciation
- Make copies of instructional materials when needed
- Teach cultural values of the U.S. and skills required for local employment
- Oversee project centered on promoting English and/or vocational learning and literacy among refugees.
- Minimum Commitment: Internship commitments typically run about 15 hours per week for a 4- to 6-month period.
Learning Objectives:
- Interns will become adept at teaching English learners of various skill levels
- Candidates will gain insights in how to help new immigrants become integrated in U.S. society
Qualifications:
- Current undergrad, graduate student or recently graduated student with a focus in English, Communication, TESOL, International Studies, or a related field
- English fluency required
- Ability to work with student with various levels of English experience
- Proficiency in cross-cultural communication
- Ideal candidates will have tutoring experience or experience in education; however, teaching experience is not required
- Students who are pursuing a certificate in TESOL are particularly encouraged to apply
This position reports to the VESL Instructor.
This is an unpaid internship. Work-related driving is eligible for charitable mileage rate reimbursement.
Internships are available for current college students, graduate students, and graduates less than one year post-graduation. Course credit and transcript notation are available if the student submits the appropriate paperwork to the Volunteer and Donations Coordinator.
