LOCATION: Missoula, Montana
COMMITMENT: 3+ months; Minimum 10 hrs/week

REPORTS TO: Employment Specialist

BACKGROUND:

Founded in 1933, the International Rescue Committee is a leading, non-sectarian non-profit organization providing emergency relief, protection, rehabilitation assistance, resettlement services, and advocacy for refugees and victims of oppression or violent conflict.  IRC Missoula staff ensure new refugees have food, shelter, and clothing, and work with refugees to help them gain self-sufficiency through English language classes, job training and placement services, and community participation activities.                                                                                                                     

SCOPE OF WORK:

Interns will teach job readiness training classes to newly arrived refugees. The course teaches refugees the skills to navigate the job search process in order to become economically self-sufficient. Curriculum topics include, but are not limited to; job cycle, job search, resume development, job applications, interviews and U.S. work culture. Interns will also have the opportunity to further develop the curriculum and implementation of the job readiness training program. 4-6 hours per week will be devoted to teaching and developing the course. Depending on availability, interns may also be paired one-on-one with refugees to assist with individualized job search. Interns will assist refugees in the following areas; job search, job applications, follow-up on applications and interviews, new hire paperwork and assisting with transportation routes. Interns are required to meet at least 2 hours per week, one-on-one, during the job search until clients are employed. Training will be provided during the initial weeks of the internship with weekly supervision meetings for the remained of the semester. All interested applicants are encouraged to apply.

ESSENTIAL POSITION FUNCTIONS:

  • Teach job readiness training class with the assistance of interpretation
  • Further develop curriculum and programing using effective teaching methods and best practice
  • Support refugee families as they work towards self-sufficiency by assisting in the job search, application and interview process
  • Conduct bus training to employment related locations such as IRC, Job Service and place of work
  • This role does not take the place of IRC staff roles, but supplements the role of the Employment Specialist  
  • Other related duties as assigned

REQUIREMENTS:

  • Able to commit at least six hours per week for the duration of one full semester; daytime availability required
  • Self-starter, takes initiative
  • Some job-seeking experience and familiarity with the job search process
  • Willingness to ride the bus and provide public transportation orientations
  • Communicate and record all volunteer activities on a monthly basis
  • Patient, flexible and reliable
  • Adhere to IRC volunteer and workplace policies, including confidentiality policies and respect for family experiences
  • Ability to communicate clearly and effectively in English and across cultures; additional fluency in a refugee language preferred, but not required (Arabic, Tigrinya, Swahili, Amharic)

IRC Missoula Resource Development Intern - Recruiting

As a resource development intern you will be responsible for assisting the Development Coordinator with various aspects of fundraising, event planning, volunteer recruitment and coordination, and handling in-kind donations. Tasks may include recording donations and responding to donors, answering volunteer inquiries, maintaining records of volunteers and their service hours, processing donations of goods and assisting with the in-kind inventory management. As a communications intern you will be responsible for assisting in the community outreach and communication strategy for the International Rescue Committee in Missoula. You can expect to work on projects as varied as fundraising campaigns to advocacy drives, anywhere that specific messaging is needed. As such, you will be expected to learn about the IRC (history, scope of work, values, ect.), our clients, and trends in refugee resettlement in order to communicate to a variety of audiences in a manner consistent with our messaging.
