TITLE: Housing and Logistics Intern
LOCATION: Missoula, Montana
START DATE: Summer or Fall 2024
COMMITMENT: 15+ hours per week during standard business hours for one semester

BACKGROUND:

The International Rescue Committee is the leading nonsectarian, voluntary organization providing relief, protection, and resettlement services for refugees and victims of oppression or violent conflict. The IRC is committed to freedom, human dignity, and self-reliance. This commitment is reflected in well-planned resettlement assistance, global emergency relief, rehabilitation, and advocacy for refugees. Founded in 1933, the IRC is a global leader in emergency relief, rehabilitation, protection of human rights, post-conflict development, resettlement services, and advocacy for those uprooted or affected by conflict and oppression. The resettlement office in Missoula, Montana provides services to approximately 120 newly arriving refugees per year.

SCOPE OF WORK:

The primary activity of the Housing and Logistics Intern is to assist the Housing Manager in their duties of securing and coordinating the set-up logistics for housing for newly arrived refugee clients. These duties are outlined in the Essential Functions section below. Flexible hybrid schedule in which duties can be performed in-person and remotely, as allowable by certain tasks. The position reports to the Housing Manager.

ESSENTIAL POSITION FUNCTIONS:

  • Assist in securing housing for clients including searching for, applying for, and inspecting units.
  • Assist the IRC with in-kind donation management as it pertains to household furniture and supplies that the IRC is required to provide to clients 
  • Coordinate client move-ins, which can include setting up home with purchased and donated items, moving items and household goods, and shopping for needed items 
  • Direct staff and move-in volunteers to assist in home set-ups
  • Troubleshoot housing-related issues reported by clients, such as appliances or heating systems not functioning, and calling landlords or repairmen as necessary. 
  • Other related duties as assigned

 

REQUIREMENTS:

  • Must be 18 or older with a valid driver's license and insurance
  • Ability to be flexible for short notice on client arrival in setting up homes.
  • Ability to lift 25 lbs
  • Have strong attention to detail, reliability, organization, and cross-cultural communication skills
  • Able to pass an IRC background check through HireRight 
  • Experience working with refugees/diverse populations is a plus
     

POSITION LOGISTICS:

  • Compensation: This is an unpaid internship – college credit available upon request
  • Hours: Flexible, minimum of 15 scheduled hours per week
  • Supervisor: Housing Manager
  • Complete an Intern Orientation which covers: The role of the IRC, IRC policies to which all interns and volunteers must adhere, and how to track your internship hours.
  • Required training and orientation on the housing program and process at the IRC
  • Required training on use of interpretation tools to address language barriers
