TITLE: Transportation Ambassador (this can be a volunteer or internship position)
LOCATION: Missoula
START DATE: Depends on need and family arrivals
COMMITMENT: Minimum of 2 hours a week for 4-6 months.
BACKGROUND:
Founded in 1933, the International Rescue Committee is a leading, non-sectarian non-profit organization providing emergency relief, protection, rehabilitation assistance, resettlement services, and advocacy for refugees and victims of oppression or violent conflict. IRC Missoula staff ensure new refugees have food, shelter, and clothing, and work with refugees to help them gain self-sufficiency through English language classes, job training and placement services, and community participation activities.
SCOPE OF VOLUNTEER WORK:
IRC Bus Ambassadors will assist refugee families in learning how to independently ride the bus. Ambassadors will show families how to read a bus map and/or use the mobile bus app and ensure that they feel confident in riding the bus to key locations determined by IRC staff.
REQUIREMENTS:
- Able to commit at least two hours a week for 4-6 months; availability on weekdays between 9am and 5pm preferred
- Ability to utilize Mountain Line trip planner and app to plan routes and get refugees to/from their destinations
- Patience and a willingness to show families multiple times how to get to certain locations
- Ability to communicate with IRC staff via email and Microsoft Teams
- Ability to track when clients have received training to certain key locations
- Adhere to IRC volunteer and workplace policies, including confidentiality policies and respect for family experiences
- Ability to communicate clearly and effectively in English and across cultures; additional fluency in a refugee language preferred, but not required
TRAINING:
- Complete the volunteer orientation training which takes place virtually and is approximately 1 hour. Training covers:
- The role the IRC
- IRC policies to which all volunteers must adhere
- How to track your volunteer hours
- Training on use of interpretation tools to address language barriers
- Car seat installation training (in the event clients are transported using personal vehicle)
POSITION LOGISITICS:
This can be a volunteer position or unpaid internship
Internship is eligible for school credit upon request
Hours: 2+ per week
