Department: NorCal Development 
Location: Remote or Hybrid, if located in Northern California 
Duration: Internships require a commitment of 4 months, ~10-15 hours/week, OR minimum of 240 hours total. Volunteers require 3-6 hours/week, 3-4 months minimum commitment. 

SCOPE OF WORK:

The NorCal Grants Volunteer/Intern will support the Development team in Northern California with a primary focus on prospecting for new grant opportunities and providing administrative support for the grant management process. This internship offers an excellent opportunity to gain hands-on experience in the non-profit sector, particularly in grant development, research, and administrative support. 

RESPONSIBILITIES: 

General responsibilities could include, but are not limited to the following: 

Prospecting and Grant Research: 

  • Conduct research to identify potential grant opportunities from foundations, corporations, and government sources. 
  • Analyze grant opportunities to determine alignment with IRC’s mission and programs. 
  • Create detailed summaries of grant opportunities to facilitate a go/no-go process. 
  • Develop detailed profiles of prospective grant makers and funding sources. 

Administrative Support: 

  • Maintain a comprehensive calendar of grant deadlines, reporting requirements, and renewal opportunities. 
  • Assist in organizing and maintaining electronic grant files and documentation. 
  • Prepare and compile necessary documentation for grant submissions, ensuring all required materials are complete and accurate. 

Grant Management: 

  • Support the tracking and monitoring of grant-funded projects on Asana to ensure compliance with grant terms and conditions. 
  • Collaborate with the communications team to create content that highlights the impact of grant funding. 

Data Management and Reporting: 

  • Maintain accurate records of grant proposals, awards, and communications in the donor database. 
  • Assist in data entry and analysis to support grant management and reporting. 

REQUIREMENTS: 

  • Interest in pursuing a career in non-profit fundraising, such as current and recently graduated college students and individuals pursuing similar experience through non-formal educational opportunities. 

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills. 
  • Detail-oriented with excellent organizational skills. 
  • Experience with grant writing and research tools is a plus. 
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team. 
  • Passion for creating equitable opportunities for everyone, including refugees, immigrants, and people of color. 
  • Passion for the IRC’s mission and commitment to humanitarian principles 

LEARNING OBJECTIVES: 

  • Gain hands-on experience in grant research, prospecting, and administrative support. 
  • Learn about the processes of securing and managing grant funding. 
  • Develop skills in data management and analysis using Salesforce. 
  • Understand the operations of an international humanitarian organization.
