Remote Volunteer Opportunities

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the IRC in Sacramento is working remotely until further notice. The physical IRC office is not accessible for clients/partners/staff during this time, however, we are continuing to provide client services remotely and with the support of virtual volunteers. The following opportunities will support the IRC in Sacramento and our relief efforts.

Thank you for your interest in assisting refugees and asylees in our community. By volunteering with the IRC in Sacramento, you can share your unique experience and skills directly with IRC clients. Volunteer support is an integral part of the IRC’s mission to provide opportunities for refugees to thrive in Sacramento.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Volunteers help manage the day-to-day operation of the IRC in Sacramento by assisting clients to access services and staff, manage front desk operations, answer phones, and respond to general questions about the IRC. Volunteers may also assist Case Managers with individual client activities.

COMMITMENT

Hours per week: 6+/- hours per week, during IRC’s regular business hours of 9 am – 5 pm, Monday – Friday

Duration: 4-6 months. Longer volunteer commitments encouraged. 

All volunteers must be at least 18 years of age and undergo a security background check.

 

GENERAL REQUIREMENTS

Our office is a fast-paced environment that is successful due to both the personal initiative of individual staff members and the team-like mentality of the entire organization. The ideal volunteer will be able to complete their daily responsibilities, to solve problems with minimal supervision, and to provide support as needed to the overall team. Volunteers work alongside staff and interns to provide direct services. 

Candidates must have the following qualities:

  • Reliable with strong attention to timeliness
  • Excellent communication skills (both intercultural, interpersonal, and with supervisors)
  • Possess a great attention to detail
  • Organized and able to multi-task 
  • Have a strong sense of personal initiative
  • Digital fluency with proficiency in Microsoft Office and social media networks
  • Able to work with a team and independently in a fast-paced setting

Language Interpreter (Dari) Volunteer Service Description
The Language Interpreter volunteer will support staff and our clients with interpretation services. This work will consist of working directly with IRC Sacramento staff and their client's interpreting legal documents, conversations, assessments, and other needs. Fluency in Dari required.

Language Interpreter (Farsi) Volunteer Service Description
The Language Interpreter volunteer will support staff and our clients with interpretation services. This work will consist of working directly with IRC Sacramento staff and their client's interpreting legal documents, conversations, assessments, and other needs. Fluency in Farsi required.

Language Interpreter (Pashto) Volunteer Service Description
The Language Interpreter volunteer will support staff and our clients with interpretation services. This work will consist of working directly with IRC Sacramento staff and their client's interpreting legal documents, conversations, assessments, and other needs. Fluency in Pashto required.

Language Interpreter (Arabic) Volunteer Service Description
The Language Interpreter volunteer will support staff and our clients with interpretation services. This work will consist of working directly with IRC Sacramento staff and their client's interpreting legal documents, conversations, assessments, and other needs. Fluency in Arabic required.

The Language Interpreter volunteer will support staff and our clients with interpretation services. This work will consist of working directly with IRC Sacramento staff and their client's interpreting legal documents, conversations, assessments, and other needs. Fluency in Russian required.

Career Pathways

Career Pathways Volunteer Service Description (QUALIFIED, PROFESSIONAL APPLICANTS ONLY)
The IRC’s Career Pathways program assists clients to obtain professional jobs within the fields of Healthcare, Administration, Finance, Security, Construction/Engineering, IT, and Transportation. The position will assist in implementing IRC career training, connecting clients with technical off-site career training, and assisting the Career Development staff in ensuring that participants secure professional employment. Position could support general responsibilities, advanced career training, and generalist roles depending on program needs and placement strengths. 

Career Pathways Professional Mentor Service Description (QUALIFIED, PROFESSIONAL APPLICANTS ONLY)
The IRC’s Career Pathways program assists IRC clients to access professional jobs. Working in the fields of Healthcare, Administration, Finance, Security, Civil Engineering/Construction, Project Management, IT, and Transportation, the volunteer mentor will assist in implementing career training at IRC, getting clients into technical trainings off-site, and ensure participants enter professional employment. 

Career Pathways Professional Mentor - Civil Engeering Service Description (QUALIFIED, PROFESSIONAL APPLICANTS ONLY)
The IRC’s Career Pathways program assists IRC clients to access professional jobs. Working in Civil Engineering/Construction, the Career Pathways Professional Mentor will assist in implementing career training at IRC, getting clients into technical trainings off-site, relevant networks or organizations, guidance to achieve their long-term career goals, and ensure participants enter professional employment in their specified areas of interest.

Digital Mentor (Dari Interpreter) Volunteer Service Description
The IRC provides Digital Literacy workshops to help clients safely use online resources and digital devices to build their language capabilities, search for employment, and get access to social, financial, home transportation and health aid. Volunteers will support staff with all aspects of the remote literacy workshops for the Digital Access Project. Fluency in Dari required.

Digital Mentor (Farsi Interpreter) Volunteer Service Description
The IRC provides Digital Literacy workshops to help clients safely use online resources and digital devices to build their language capabilities, search for employment, and get access to social, financial, home transportation and health aid.
