Student Support Volunteer

SCOPE OF WORK:

The Student Support Volunteer will help empower refugee students who attend school in the Salt Lake City area by collaborating with school faculty and the IRC’s education team to provide them with safe, outdoor spaces to continue learning in-person, through “Learning Hubs,” even as school goes remote. Please note this is an in-person opportunity available at two separate locations within Salt Lake County. The safety and health of the refugees we serve, staff, volunteers and partners is of the utmost importance. This role will heavily focus on safety and maintaining healthy practices. Role-specific training and guidelines will be provided in order to increase the likelihood interactions remain safe. 

RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Provide tutoring support for students who are disproportionately impacted by distance learning, including one-on-one reading help and subject-content support 
• Oversee initial implementation of safety guidelines at in-person learning site 
• Maintain and follow all prescribed and required safety guidelines, supporting others to do the same, to promote health and wellbeing 
• Support Learning Hub logistics by connecting with students and communities; support promotion of the Learning Hub at each site.  
• Maintain open communications with the IRC Education Team as well as Salt Lake School District representatives; self-report any symptoms or illness immediately to the site supervisor before attending any in-person tutoring 
• Provide opt-in on-call support to the education team to ensure youth are connected with the resources they need, including supply delivery 

REQUIREMENTS:

• Able to commit to at least one shift (around 3 hrs.) per week on a consistent basis, available days include Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday 
• In-person shifts are:
  • Mondays 8am-11am
  • Tuesdays 8am-11am
  • Wednesdays 9:30am-12:30pm
  • Thursdays 8am-11am
  • Fridays 8am-11am
• Able to commit until the end of October (weather permitting, since this is an outdoor activity) 
• Adhere to IRC volunteer and workplace policies, including confidentiality policies and respect for family experiences 
• Patient, flexible, and reliable 
• Able to communicate effectively and clearly in English, knowledge of any of these languages a plus: Kinyarwanda, Kiswahili, Rohingya, Dari/Farsi/Pashto, Spanish, Vietnamese and Arabic
