The IRC in Atlanta’s virtual English as a Second Language (ESL) classes assist refugee and immigrant adults to develop the language skills critical for success in our community. Our classes help adult students to build vocabulary and communication skills, develop skills needed for the workforce, and learn about American structures and systems, with the ultimate goal of empowering clients to be successful and productive members of their communities who are civically engaged and able to pursue the career pathways of their choice. All of our programs are currently operating virtually due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Responsibilities:
- Virtual ESL Class Assistant volunteers assist IRC lead instructors in facilitating groups of students in weekly virtual synchronous classes.
Requirements:
- Strong communication skills including communication between instructors and fellow volunteers before/during/and after classes; and communication with adult English language learners during classes via technology
- Able to connect to virtual (Zoom) weekly classes with webcam video and audio
- An interest in or experience with teaching English as a Second Language
- An interest in or experience with working closely with a diverse population of adults
- Comfortable working with variable numbers of students virtually (individually and in groups) and in working with students at variable levels of English proficiency
- Comfortable adapting learning activities with limited notice and assisting with (limited) technological troubleshooting as needed
Minimum Commitment:
- 1.5 to 3 hours per week for morning and/or afternoon classes

Virtual Connect to Success Conversation Partner
The IRC in Atlanta’s Connect to Success (C2S) program is one of the only programs in the U.S. dedicated exclusively to supporting out-of-school refugee youth ages 16 to 24. C2S addresses the unique barriers to success faced by this population through holistic support, including one-on-one coaching and group workshops. All of our programs are currently operating virtually due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
