Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program volunteer

Start date: Ongoing

This upcoming tax season, the IRC in Denver will sponsor free tax preparation services for refugees, asylees and Special Immigration Visa holders in our community.
This opportunity is great for volunteers who are interested in learning more about tax rules while also helping clients to receive all the benefits they're entitled to and comply with their tax obligations.

Location:

Colorado & I-25

Time Commitment:

Volunteer a minimum of 10 five-hour shifts during tax season (starting in late January and ending in early April).  The volunteer shifts will be during weekday evenings (Tuesdays and Thursdays). If you prefer to volunteer on Saturday mornings, the African Community Center will be offering weekend shifts in Aurora.

Responsibilities:

We are looking for volunteers to join our two experienced tax preparers who manage the service and will support volunteers throughout the tax season.

  • If you have limited experience preparing tax returns, you will be required to attend three 4-hour training sessions at the Piton Foundation (next to Union Station). The training sessions will be available on multiple Saturdays in December and January.
  • If you have experience preparing tax returns, you will be required to attend a one 4-hour training session at the Piton Foundation.
  • All volunteers are required to pass an open-book, online certification test administered by the Internal Revenue Service.
