Background: The International Rescue Committee (IRC) helps people whose lives and livelihoods are shattered by conflict and disaster to survive, recover and gain control of their future. IRC teams provide health, infrastructure, learning and economic support to people in 40 countries worldwide. The IRC also provides support to thousands of refugees resettling in 26 U.S. cities each year through housing assistance, case management and referral services, job readiness and placement, English language training, community and cultural orientation, health and wellness programs, immigration services and other community integration activities.

Scope of Internship: The IRC Summer Youth Program Intern will be responsible for calling and enrolling referred families in IRC Youth Programs. The intern will assist with implementation of the Virtual Summer Reading program for grades K-5. The Virtual Summer Reading program focuses on literacy and social emotional development using culturally appropriate texts in online group classes. We are seeking an intern who is patient, responsible, reliable, and works well with people from other cultures. Interns must have reliable internet and laptop; and feel comfortable working independently. 

Location: Hybrid. Most days Intern can work remotely, but is needed to be local to attend special events and assist with program supply drop offs at office or in South King County area. Office is located in South King County, WA area (outside of Seattle, WA).

Time Commitment: 10-20 hours/week. 2pm/3pm - 6pm/7pm Monday through Thursdays. Some days will be in-person for events or supply drop offs which may go later/start earlier. 

Essential position functions:

  • Enroll 50-75 students in Virtual Summer Reading Program
  • Track program attendance
  • Work with Individualized Learning Programs Teaching Assistant to provide 5-6 virtual sessions per week for 6 weeks of programming.
  • Make post program feedback calls and data collection to contribute to reporting

Requirements:

  • Must be culturally sensitive, respectful of diverse backgrounds and able to creatively work with multilingual students who are English language learners; previous cross-cultural communication experience is a definite plus. 
  • Strong applicants will have an interest in student engagement strategies and be flexible, persistent, responsible, proactive, and an effective communicator 
  • Previous experience working with youth and families; understanding of basic school systems desired. 
  • Interns must have reliable internet, phone service and laptop; Must feel comfortable working independently, while working alongside a team.  
  • Ability to communicate effectively in English; additional fluency in languages spoken by youth arriving as refugees helpful, but not required. 
  • Willingness to adhere to IRC volunteer and workplace policies.
