BACKGROUND: The International Rescue Committee responds to the world’s worst humanitarian crises and helps people to survive and rebuild their lives in over 40 countries and 26 U.S. cities. Domestically, our 26 offices across the U.S. ensure new arrivals have food, shelter, and clothing, and work with refugees to help them gain self-sufficiency.
SCOPE OF WORK: The Journalism intern will support The IRC in Los Angeles office by writing articles that reflect the lives of refugees and their communities. The ideal candidate possesses well developed writing and reporting skills, is organized, and pays special attention to detail.
COMMITMENT: Intern will have the opportunity to work at least 10-15 hours per week, Monday through Friday, for a minimum of 3-4 months. This is an unpaid internship.
•Generate and pitch story ideas about refugees in the Los Angeles area
•Research and conduct qualitative interviews with refugees, asylees and immigrants about their resettlement experience
•Write stories that will be featured in newsletters, social media, and on the IRC website
•Write engaging content aimed at promoting the work of the Los Angeles office
1.Intern will gain journalism experience interacting with and documenting the incredible stories of recently resettled refugees
•Current undergraduate, graduate Journalism student, or less than one year out of school
•Flexibility, resourcefulness, and easy-going attitude a plus
•Be able to work independently with minimal supervision
•Must be culturally sensitive and respectful of various backgrounds, lifestyles and beliefs
•Fluent in English; Fluency in Arabic, Armenian, Farsi, Spanish, and Chinese a plus
•Willingness to adhere to IRC volunteer and workplace policies
•Respect client privacy and treat information as confidential
•Valid California Driver’s License and operating vehicle with insurance to travel to interviews.
