International Rescue Committee (IRC)

Entering Careers in Healthcare

The IRC participates in the SWITCH (San Diego Workforce Initiative Towards Careers in Healthcare) Program to assist low-income people to train for careers in the healthcare field. Participants receive a four week Work Readiness Training program and Medical/Vocational ESL classes (if necessary), case management, job search assistance, and $7,000 towards vocational/technical training. Participants may enroll in programs such as phlebotomy, medical billing, dental assistant or an alternative medical training program that fits their own career goals. Since April 2011, over 75 people have enrolled in the program, including 28 refugees. The program is funded by the Department of Health and Human Services and the San Diego Workforce Partnership.
