The IRC in San Diego’s economic development programs are housed in the Center for Financial Opportunity (CFO). The CFO model centers on the systematic integration of employment, financial education, career development, and small business development programs. This approach helps low income families move out of poverty and stay out of poverty by advancing in the workforce, making sounding financial decisions, and building assets.
The Job Readiness Coordinator position will play a central role in the IRC’s Center for Financial Opportunity. The Job Readiness Coordinator will advance economic opportunities for low income families by helping them to secure and retain employment. The Job Readiness Coordinator will manage the IRC’s Job Training and Application Lab (JTAL), a computer lab staffed by a team of volunteer job mentors who assist with one-on-one job searches.
Responsibilities:
- Recruit, screen, train, and manage volunteer job mentors and match them with appropriate IRC clients seeking employment.
- Work closely with IRC employment and Career Development staff in coordinating and scheduling daily job search appointments for participants in these programs.
- Lead orientations for other neighborhood residents who are interested in receiving one-on-one assistance with searching and applying for jobs.
- Continued development and implementation of financial aid application assistance program elements.
- Track all required client demographic data and outcomes from job searches, including conducting regular scheduled follow-ups; enter all data in a timely fashion in IRC’s ETO database system.
Requirements:
- 4 year degree, preferably in business or related field
- Fluency in a Arabic, Somali, Vietnamese, or Spanish a plus
- Prior experience working with diverse individuals in a multi-cultural setting
- Prior experience volunteering or working in social service and economic development programs a plus
- Must be highly motivated, detail-oriented and very flexible.

The Financial Skills Coordinator will play a central role in the IRC’s Financial Counseling and Education Program. The IRC in San Diego has operated a Financial Counseling and Education program since 2006. Since that time, the IRC has provided financial counseling to over 1,000 participants and financial education workshops to over 1,500 participants. Participants have reduced their debt by $314,000 and 624 participants established or increased their FICO scores.
The Financial Skills Coordinator will help newly arrived refugees gain the knowledge and skills to make sound financial decisions and build assets. This effort will help to reduce financial hardship among low income families while also supporting in building a foundation for future financial security.
Responsibilities:
- Lead and support classroom trainings on budgeting and bill payment, bank account management, and building credit.
- Provide direct financial counseling and coaching on common financial challenges for new arrivals, including preparing a household budget, paying bills successfully, resolving billing disputes, and enrolling in low-income discount programs.
- Accept applications for loan products, including credit-building microloans; assist clients with completing applications and ensure accuracy of information.
- Enter all client demographic and program outcome data in a timely fashion into IRC’s ETO database system

Family Education Coordinator

Under supervision of the Family Education Manager, the Family Education Coordinator will provide support to IRC’s First Things First Department by assisting with its elementary afterschool program, TEAM Project (Teach, Engage, Achieve, and Motivate), and the First Things First family education programs.
The First Things First program provides adult education and early childhood education to low-income families. The AmeriCorps member will provide parenting education and family literacy instruction to help refugee parents become increasingly more engaged in their children’s education.
TEAM Project is First Things First’s afterschool program that aims to strengthen the literacy foundation that low-income, under-performing elementary children need to succeed. The program seeks to enrich all aspects of the children’s lives – academic, social, psychological, and physical. Students will actively engage in afterschool tutoring and English instruction five days a week, two hours a day. Emphasis will be placed on improving the students’ academic performance, especially in literacy, math, and technology.
Responsibilities:
- Provide at least 15 hours of literacy support to between 20 and 30 youth enrolled in FTF education programs (Early Childhood Education, Preschool, and TEAM Project)
- Implement literacy activities in the Early Childhood Education classrooms that further develop the instructional program as outlined by the program’s lead Teacher.
- Help to establish a positive, innovative, and engaging learning environment at IRC’s new afterschool program, the TEAM Project. Ensure direct visual supervision of children.
- Develop and implement literacy activities for children and parents that are academically, developmentally, and culturally appropriate.
- Maintain daily communication with parents, and provide family literacy lessons to participating parents.
- Assist with volunteer tutor and literacy training, as needed.
- Ensure that the required documentation and data are collected, maintained and submitted to the Program Manager in a timely manner.
- Participate in program meetings, staff development activities, and other duties as assigned.
Requirements:
- Bachelor degree in a related field preferred. College units in early childhood education a plus.
- Prior experience developing and implementing literacy and ESL curriculum a plus.
- Must have reliable transportation and maintain valid driver’s license and insurance coverage.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Able to think and work independently. A strong leader as well as a team member.

ESL Teacher - Youth Programs

The IRC’s Youth Department provides after school tutoring, mentoring, leadership development, sports and arts based programming for students aged 14-24. Under the supervision of the Youth Program Manager, the AmeriCorps ESL Teacher will be responsible for the day to day activities of the ESL Program in El Cajon and City Heights.
Responsibilities:
- Provide at least 15 hours of literacy support to between 20 and 30 youth in City Heights and El Cajon.
- Support in development and implementation of culturally appropriate and level appropriate curriculum to engage students in learning and enrichment.
- Supervise volunteers and facilitate conversation groups fro participants.
- Teach daily after-school ESL classes in El Cajon and City Heights.
- Lead weekly college preparatory classes in El Cajon.
- Assess and monitor student performance and needs by acting as a liaison to key teachers and staff at program site; track all required data in IRC’s ETO database system.
- Participate in staff development and staff meetings and performs other duties as assigned.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in educational field or equivalent required.
- Two years experience teaching in a classroom setting preferred.
- Five years experience working in youth programming preferred.
- Experience working with cross-cultural youth desired.
- Excellent verbal communication skills.
- Bilingual preferred.
- Driver’s license required.
