Meet Katelyn

“My experience created a deep admiration for the resilience and determination of our new neighbors.”

Seeing media reports about the global refugee crisis inspired Katelyn to bridge the gap between her academic research and the needs of refugees. As a PhD candidate specializing in vehicle emissions, the IRC was the perfect place to roll up her sleeves and make a difference. 

What she does

Katlyn leverages her expertise to help newcomers overcome a major challenge: navigating their new community. Her trainings transform intricate transit schedules into clear instructions and demystify bus routes and subway lines for those who rely on them most.

“It's a tangible way to use my expertise to improve people's lives. I take pride in equipping people with skills to live in a new environment.” 

How it helps

Imagine the impact: a person arriving in a new country—overwhelmed by unfamiliar transportation systems—gaining the self-reliance to traverse their new community with confidence.
