Bracing for a vote in Central African Republic

A long-running civil war decimated the health care system in CAR, where almost 20 percent of children die before the age of five.

On Sunday voters in Central African Republic (CAR) will go to the polls to choose a new president and 105 legislators. 

One of the world’s poorest countries, CAR is struggling to recover from a long-running civil war that ended in 2007. Observers fear that continuing violence in some regions of the country could disrupt the elections and plunge the population even deeper into misery.

The International Rescue Committee’s Peter Biro traveled to CAR last spring to report on the worsening humanitarian situation there and the IRC’s life-saving programs.   Here's a look back at a few of the stories he covered:
