Sierra Leone’s Refugee All Stars performing at the IRC headquarters in New York

This afternoon IRC colleagues and I crammed into our New York headquarters' largest conference room for an impromptu performance by some of our musical heroes: Sierra Leone's Refugee All Stars. The band stopped by our office on their way to a sound check for their gig tonight at the Highline Ballroom. Singing, dancing and drumming, the All Stars made their way to the "stage" (a circle of chairs) in a very cool kind of percussion procession. They had us mesmerized.
After the band took a break to tell their story -- the musicians found each other in refugee camps in Guinea after fleeing a brutal war in their own country -- they took time to answer our questions. Then the All Stars launched into one last song and started pulling some of us into their circle to dance with them.
It was an especially exciting day because the IRC has been with the band from their time in the camps, to the debut of the documentary Sierra Leone's Refugee All Stars, and now for their tour around the country as they promote their new album, Rise and Shine. (It's a great album that fuses traditional West African music and roots reggae -- it also raises money for IRC's work with refugees around the world. You can buy it here.)
The IRC will have a table at tonight's show at the Highline Ballroom and at some future shows on the All Stars tour. Hope to see you there!
