A story published in the New York Times yesterday spotlights community farms around the United States dedicated to refugee agriculture – including the International Rescue Committee’s own New Roots program. New Roots brings resettled refugees together to share experiences and feel a connection to their new home through community gardening and nutrition and micro-enterprise programs.
Many of the refugees featured in the Times article have been assisted by the IRC. The article also describes several IRC New Roots projects, including Drew Gardens in the Bronx borough of New York and an urban farm and farmer’s market in San Diego’s City Heights neighborhood.
Times reporter Patricia Leigh Brown writes, “New Roots in City Heights, which Michelle Obama visited last spring, is a model for today’s micro-enterprise. (It is also a culinary education, where a Zimbabwean grower can discover bok choy.)”
The story vividly illustrates how IRC supporters are helping refugees from around the globe who have fled war and persecution provide nutritious, sustainable food options as well as income for their families.
