- In 2011, an estimated 4.3 million people were newly displaced due to conflict or persecution.
- More than 800,000 people were displaced as refugees across international borders, the highest number in more than a decade.
- Another 3.5 million people were newly displaced within the borders of their countries, a 20 percent increase from 2010.

I'm forever grateful for my parents' decision to flee our homeland of Laos. We stayed in a refugee camp in Thailand for five years. The workers from UNHCR played a key role in my career path. Each day as we waited for our warm cup of soya milk before school, I thought to myself, "one day I will give back to those in need". With pride and joy I wish to say "I'm a proud Canadian and Registered Nurse, my career enables me to give back each and every day".
