Rescue Gift of the Week: Community Cash Box

Nadine Ntahuba/IRC

When women get together and pool their resources, a few coins dropped into a box soon become enough money for loans to start businesses.

In some of Ivory Coast’s poorest villages, local women dream of their own small businesses, but have no way to realize those dreams. We help organize them into groups called village savings and loan associations, where like-minded women put their small household earnings toward the group’s broader goals. When there’s enough cash in the box, a member can take out a loan to start her own business — such as a small grocery store, hair salon or tailor shop — then begin to repay that loan back into the cash box to fund another woman’s ideas.

$90 can buy a strong lockbox for a village savings and loan association, giving women a secure place to keep the money that will help build stores and stock the shelves.

This holiday season, give an IRC Rescue Gift to someone special.  Your online gift will be matched dollar for dollar up to $1.68 million through December 31.
