It was 70 years ago this week — August 4, 1940 — that the IRC’s Varian Fry boarded a transatlantic flight from LaGuardia Airport in New York on his way to German-occupied France on a mission to rescue 200 leading artists and intellectuals who were on the Nazis’ most-wanted list. more »

In 1940, shortly after the world watched the appalling spectacle of Nazi troops goose-stepping down the Champs-Élysées in Paris, a 32-year old American editor by the name of Varian Fry arrived in France to rescue some of Europe’s most famous artists, writers, and intellectuals. more »
