Relationships between UN peacekeeping missions and humanitarian agencies are rarely totally harmonious, since they are present for different reasons and those reasons sometimes clash. And humanitarian agencies often fear being associated with the political and military elements of peacekeeping missions, in case this association affects the perception of their impartiality. But in some humanitarian crises they are forced to deal with each other more than in others. At $5.2 billion, the total figure for Syria aid is staggering. It’s more than three times the size of the appeal for Haiti after the 2010 earthquake, and more than four times the size of the 2004 South Asian tsunami appeal. Of the $5 billion? $2.98 billion is earmarked for Syrian refugees, while $1.4 billion is to pay for in-country aid work. more »
