American Grown: The Story of the White House Kitchen Garden and Gardens Across America by Michelle Obama (Crown, 2012)
In her new book, First Lady Michelle Obama offers a behind-the-scenes look at the kitchen garden on the White House’s South Lawn and and shares the stories of other gardens that have inspired her. One of them is the International Rescue Committee-supported New Roots Community Farm in San Diego, which Mrs. Obama called a "phenomenal" model for building healthy communities when she visited in 2010.
Through the IRC's New Roots program, refugees from around the globe who have fled war and persecution are providing nutritious food for their families and planting new roots in their adopted communities in the United States.
