Basketball is much more than a game in Salaam Dunk, a stirring documentary about an Iraqi women’s basketball team. For the young women on the team, it is a blissful release from the realities of a war-torn nation. Most have never touched a basketball or been allowed to join any sports team, yet they discover a deep joy in playing hoops together. The women, from all different backgrounds – Arab, Kurd, Christian, Sunni, and Shiite – learn what it means to work together as a team.
Salaam Dunk will be screened on April 30 in La Jolla, CA as part of the International Documentary Film Series, to benefit the International Rescue Committee in San Diego.
