Habiba, 29, told me her family was forced to leave because of the insecurity in Somalia and because they had lost livestock they depended on for income to the ongoing drought. In January they had 40 goats but by the end of June only 10 remained. They sold half of them on the way to Dadaab in exchange for money to buy food. more »

I met Madina Aden, a 36-year-old mother of five, with her two sons at the mobile clinic run by the IRC on the outskirts of the Hagadera refugee camp in northwestern Kenya. We were treating newly arrived refugees -- families who had fled drought and insecurity in neighboring Somalia. more »

Fatuma, 25, arrived in Dadaab refugee camp four days ago by car with her mother and her five children. The young widow gave birth to her baby girl, Shire, on her way here. The family arrived without luggage -- it was stolen from the parked car late one night as they slept. more »

In mid-November, I visited the Eastleigh neighborhood of Nairobi, Kenya. I went to meet refugees from Somalia who are being helped by the IRC. The refugees had fled a chaotic situation in their homeland. more »

I stepped off of a teeming street into Aamina’s apartment, where the floury, slightly sour scent of injera lingered in the air. A round stove, a small TV, and a set of bunk beds lined the teal-gray walls of the one-room flat that Aamina shares with her two children and two employees. more »

The Women’s Refugee Commission traveled to Kenya’s Kakuma and Dadaab camps this summer. There they spoke with refugee women who risk being attacked when they leave the camps to collect firewood to cook food rations for their families. more »

Today is World AIDS Day. In Kenya, where the IRC assists refugees and local communities, HIV/AIDS hasn't been acknowledged as a problem in rural areas such as Turkana. more »
