Scope of Work: The ESL Volunteer(s) will instruct or support the Vocational ESL class for new refugee arrivals in Salt Lake City based on an existing comprehensive curriculum (available to be review upon request). Please note this is an in-person volunteer opportunity. The class schedule will be determined based on volunteer availability, but it is anticipated to meet at least twice per week for two hours between 9am-5pm. If there is volunteer availability and client interest in an evening class, that can be explored as well. The target start date for the class is May 20, 2024.

Responsibilities: 

  • Instruct a group of up to 20 adult beginner ESL learners as lead instructor, co-instructor or assistant for the VESL class utilizing existing lesson plans
  • Promote core competencies of English language skills needed to obtain and retain employment and achieve self-sufficiency

Requirements: 

  • Able to commit to teaching or assisting for at least one class session per week (around 2 hrs.) on a consistent basis
  • Familiarity with planning and delivering lessons that obtain specific measurement goals for learners using supporting curriculum. 
  • Patient, flexible, and reliable 
  • Able to communicate effectively and clearly in English, knowledge of any of the following languages is a plus: Kinyarwanda, Kiswahili, Dari/Farsi/Pashto, Spanish, Arabic 
  • For lead teacher: 3 years or more of professional experience as an ESL teacher and/or TESOL certification preferred
  • For assistant teacher: Education students, TESOL students, individuals with experience teaching or tutoring ESL in the community preferred
