The International Rescue Committee (IRC) announces that more than 112,000 people have been supported with critical health and protection programmes in Thailand thanks to funding from the European Union (EU).

The funding, totalling €1.3 million, has helped to ensure that those who have been displaced by conflict in Myanmar and sought safety in Thailand could recover from experiencing violence. Working closely with local actors on the ground, the IRC Thailand has delivered tailored essential services including support for survivors of Gender-Based Violence and mental health and psychosocial support alongside the delivery of in-kind materials such as hygiene kits and food assistance.

People supported include Nwe, a 36 year old refugee from Myanmar, who was pregnant when she was in urgent need of help. She attributed the survival of her babies to this programme, telling IRC staff, “Today, I am alive and together with my twin babies because of the support I received from IRC.”

Darren Hertz, IRC Thailand Director, said,

“The services that we have been able to provide have helped change the lives of thousands of people who have fled unimaginable violence in Myanmar. With over 110,000 people living in temporary settlements in northwestern Thailand and more people seeking refuge on a daily basis, the humanitarian response has never been more critical.

“Meanwhile, at least 16.2 million people remain in need of humanitarian assistance in Myanmar where the delivery of humanitarian aid is becoming increasingly challenging due to conflict and economic challenges. As a result, Myanmar has ranked within the top ten of the IRC’s Emergency Watchlist for the third year running.

“The EU's continued humanitarian support represents a lifeline for displaced communities. This funding has not only enabled life-saving assistance for over 112,000 refugees but has also strengthened the capacity of local partners to respond swiftly to emerging needs. As displacement continues, sustained EU Humanitarian Aid funding remains essential to ensuring that vulnerable populations—particularly women and children fleeing violence—can access the protection, healthcare, and dignity they desperately need to rebuild their lives in safety."
