Volunteer Opportunities

Thank you for your interest in welcoming refugees to your community. By volunteering with the IRC in San Jose, CA, you use your skills to help people who have fled violence and persecution to rebuild their lives in America. See below for the latest volunteer opportunities and how to apply.

  • San Jose, CA

    Youth Volunteer Tutor

    Start Date: Ongoing
    Do you love kids? Would you like to have a transformative impact on our community? Can you tutor middle and/or high school refugee youth who are building new lives in Santa Clara County? By providing in-person support with schoolwork, you can empower newcomer students to build confidence, competency, and community. The International Rescue Committee (IRC) in San Jose welcomes refugees and immigrants by providing diverse services to support independence and integration. The Volunteer Tutor works with Youth Programs and will be trained by and report to the Tutoring Coordinator. The Volunteer Tutor will enhance academic success of one or more children by providing high-quality, responsive tutoring.

Volunteer process

  1. Review available opportunities and any requirements for the opportunity you are interested in.

  2. Submit your volunteer application so we can learn more about your experience and interests. The inclusion of resumes and cover letters is highly appreciated for all, but only required for interns and mentors.

  3. Complete interviews and clear a background check.

  4. Complete orientation and submit paperwork.

  5. Begin your service!
