Duration: Internships require a commitment of 4 months, 15 hours/week, or a minimum of 240 hours total. Volunteers require 3-6 hours/week, 4 months minimum.
BACKGROUND: The International Rescue Committee (IRC) responds to the world’s worst humanitarian crises and helps people to survive and rebuild their lives. At work in over 45 countries and 29 U.S. cities to restore safety, dignity and hope, the IRC leads the way from harm to home. Domestically, our 29 offices across the U.S. ensure new arrivals have food, shelter, and clothing, and work with refugees to help them gain self-sufficiency.
SCOPE OF WORK: Digital Literacy Instructor for pre-beginner/beginner adults with a minimum level of English
RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Work one-on-one in person at either the IRC San Jose office or a library to teach basic computer skills to a client.
- Teach clients basic computer skills. Focus on how to use search engines to find information, navigate websites, and assess search results. Show them how to write and send email replies. Explain the email layout, proper etiquette, and how to attach files when needed. Help them build confidence in these skills to improve their digital literacy.
REQUIREMENTS:
- Must be able to meet clients in person.
- Must be comfortable working with clients who have limited English understanding.
Understanding of Dari or Farsi is preferred.
