Scope of Role

The Volunteer Tutor will provide homework help, literacy training, English language learning, and enrichment activities. Volunteer Tutors may also provide support with community resource navigation when applicable to academic success (such as helping a student open a library card and access library resources/services). Volunteer Tutors are paired with one or more students and meet with their student(s) 2-3 times per week at regularly scheduled hours in the late afternoon or evening. They may meet in the student’s home, a local library, or (if needed) virtually. Volunteer Tutors then submit case notes regarding student progress following each session. 

 

Time Commitment

  • Must be able to commit to 2-3 tutoring sessions per week of 1-2 hours for the remainder of the school year
  • Must be available weekday afternoons/evenings
  • Must show up reliably for regularly scheduled tutor sessions
  • Must notify students ASAP of conflicts and work to reschedule tutoring session for the earliest shared availability 
  • Must complete IRC-delivered orientation and Volunteer Tutor training 
  • Must complete ongoing tutor improvement and professional development sessions  

Responsibilities

Include, but are not limited to: 

  • Committing to a weekly schedule of tutoring sessions without unnotified absence or tardiness, and notifying students and Tutor Coordinator of absences at least 48 hours in advance 
  • Completing all training, continuing education, and professional development as assigned 
  • Creating and implementing lesson/study plans 
  • Modifying lesson/study plans to align with each student’s needs
  • Providing guidance and support to empower students to develop English proficiency and improve their school performance
  • Teaching new material as needed to student(s) 
  • Assisting student(s) with connecting to and navigating community resources (applicable to schoolwork)
  • Engaging with caregivers and IRC staff to provide updates on student progress
  • Upholding policies and performing tasks necessary to create a learning environment that is linguistically supportive, accessible, trauma-informed, and respectful of and responsive to student background, context, and experience
  • Following program guidance for writing case notes for each tutoring session, and submitting case notes within 24 hours following each tutoring session
  • Tracking volunteer hours served, and consistently and accurately logging volunteer hours in Golden following each tutoring session
  • Upholding and adhering to all IRC, program, child safeguarding, and mandatory reporting policies  

Qualifications

  • Be at least 18 years old
  • Be able to meet with student(s) in their home or public place, such as a local library
  • Adhere to IRC policies and professional standards
  • Demonstrate respect for clients, staff, and other volunteers with varied backgrounds and experiences
  • Have reliable transportation 
  • Be able to work 2-6 hours per week for the duration of service commitment
  • Fluent in English (spoken and written); proficiency in Dari, Pashto, Spanish highly valued but not required
  • Competent digital literacy; comfortable using the internet and learning digital platforms for IRC and schools
  • Experience working with refugees or immigrants highly valued
  • Experience working with youth highly valued
  • Experience tutoring or working in an academic setting highly valued
