When Mulu fled conflict in the Tigray Region of Ethiopia with her family, she used a jerry-can as a boat to cross the river to Sudan. They arrived at Gedaref refugee camp with almost no possessions. The International Rescue Committee is seeing an increase in violence against women, early and forced marriage, and women and girls engaging in transactional sex in order to procure food for their families as the region is gripped by near-famine.

Last year, the Governor of Texas declared that the state would no longer accept Syrian refugees, citing security concerns after the horrific attacks in Paris. The state demanded that the International Rescue Committee halt its resettlement programs or face a lawsuit. A federal judge on June 16, 2016 dismissed the lawsuit that would have banned refugee resettlement in Texas.
