June 9, 2020 — While the events in America are in the spotlight we have been thinking about our US colleagues and clients. We must also acknowledge that racism exists and has horrific and unacceptable consequences everywhere, including right here in the UK.
The IRC as an organisation will not tolerate any form of injustice and we are proud to have a global commitment to equality as one of our values. But being proud also risks being complacent, and we still have a long way to go to tackle the racism and xenophobia that continues to run deep in society, including here in the UK.
We also recognise that we as an organisation have learning to do and changes to make. We want this historic moment to be a catalyst for real change in global, national, and local institutions, including the IRC.
We want to do more listening to ensure that any work which takes place is meaningful and long lasting. In these discussions, we will ensure that the voices of Black colleagues and clients are properly heard.
The IRC stands with people across the world speaking out against police violence towards people of colour, and especially Black people; we are working to look inwards as well as outwards to tackle discrimination.
Black lives matter to us, today and every day.
