Laura Kyrke-Smith, IRC UK Executive Director, said:

“The Nationality and Borders Bill is dangerous for refugees and asylum seekers and dangerous for Britain’s standing in the world. It penalises people who are simply exercising their right to seek asylum under international law. And it sets Britain apart from allies who take pride in showing compassion for refugees.

"This Bill has passed at a time when the British public are showing incredible support and kindness for refugees fleeing war in Ukraine. Frankly it feels like a misreading of the mood of this country.

"We urge the UK Government to rethink and strengthen its approach to refugee protection. This means resourcing the asylum system rather than deterring asylum seekers and sending them to Rwanda which, as we know from the use of similar policies by Australia, comes at a severe human cost and is ineffective.”
