The UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR) estimates that 1.44 million people will be in need of resettlement in 2020. Resettlement is a life-saving tool for the most vulnerable people caught in conflict, but the places currently offered by the international community do not correspond to the pending needs on the ground. The IRC believes that the European Union has the capacity to resettle at least 250,000 refugees by 2025, and to make a collective pledge to this effect at the Global Refugee Forum in December 2019. To begin with, member states need to make at least 30,000 resettlement places available in 2020. Read more in our new briefing “A new chance for EU leadership on resettlement."
