Over 5 million Syrians have been forced to flee their homes, searching for safety in neighbouring countries and in Europe. As crisis continues, the International Rescue Committee is working inside Syria, across the region and in Europe to support those people to live a life worth living. Here are the stories of Syrians who work for the IRC.

Some 100 people are reported dead and hundreds more injured in a suspected chemical gas attack on Tuesday in the town of Khan Sheikhoun, in Syria’s northern Idlib province. Doctors at a hospital supported by the International Rescue Committee in the city of Idlib were able to save the lives of 10 people caught in the attack. 

While these countries represent less than 6 percent of the world’s population, they host more than half of all people identified as being in need globally.

Starting in January 2014, ISIS took over large areas of Anbar and Ninewa governorates, as well as areas of Kirkuk and elsewhere. Operations to clear these areas from ISIS control and prepare for an advance on Mosul – a city 400 km north of Baghdad currently under ISIS control – have been occurring since 2015. On 17 October 2016, Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al Abadi announced that military operations to re-take Mosul from ISIS had commenced.
