Healing Classrooms
Sign up for our free online Healing Classrooms course in partnership with The Open University and learn how you can support refugee students in the classroom. The course is fully online, self-paced and open to all.
Participants can complete the course independently or whole schools can join and work through the course together.
Make your classroom a healing space for refugee students
The IRC's Healing Classrooms programme aims to support schools and educators to develop inclusive and nurturing learning spaces where refugee and asylum-seeking students can gain the necessary academic, social and emotional skills to develop their full potential.
In this training, you will:
- Learn about the key psychological impacts of conflict, forced displacement and resettlement on children’s brain development, behaviour and learning
- Develop your understanding about trauma within the context of refugee communities
- Explore psychosocial support strategies that schools can adopt to create healing spaces for students seeking sanctuary.
Whole schools training
IRC can also offer this course as part of a whole school training package which can includes:
- An introductory trainer-led session with staff
- Ongoing optional 1-1 support for staff
- A follow-up Community of Practice online session
- A follow-up workshop to help embed Healing Classrooms into school systems and daily classroom practices
- 1 or more Healing Classrooms Champions trained through our train-the-trainer programme to help embed this approach long term
Support for individual educators
Individuals taking the self-led course can also access support from our team and the wider network, including:
- Additional support from the IRC’s Healing Classrooms team via email
- Our monthly Community of Practice (Monthly Monday Munch Club)
- The option to apply to be Healing Classrooms Champions (our train-the-trainer programme) upon completing the course
