This free 5-module CPD programme provides school staff with all the key skills and knowledge needed to support refugee and asylum-seeking students. This training provides an in-depth look at the IRC’s Healing Classrooms programme, and can be tailored to fit the specific needs of your school.
In this training, you will:
- Learn in-depth about the psychological impacts of conflict, forced displacement and resettlement on children’s brain development, behaviour and learning.
- Develop a comprehensive understanding about trauma within the context of refugee communities.
- Explore a wide range of psychosocial support strategies that schools can adopt to create healing spaces for students seeking sanctuary.
- Learn about vicarious trauma and compassion fatigue with a focus on staff wellbeing.
- Receive a printed copy of the Healing Classrooms Extended Training Handbook.
Each module features case studies, discussions and good practice-sharing activities on how to best support refugee students in schools across the UK.
If you have joined the Healing Classrooms Basics Training (3-session course), you can still join this training as it will cover contents more in-depth and provide different case studies and a new handbook.
You can join either UK-wide cohorts or register your school for a bespoke version of this training.

You can join this training in two ways: individually in UK-wide sessions OR with your team in bespoke sessions to your school.
UK-wide sessions will be held online across the 5 modules. Bespoke sessions are flexible and can be delivered online or in person on a full day or across different days.
School staff who support refugee students, caregivers or families. Staff from all departments (e.g., teaching, administrative) can take part in the training.
This new Healing Classrooms training covers contents more in-depth and provides different case studies as well as a new extended handbook.
So if you have joined the Healing Classrooms Basis Training (3-session course), you are also very welcome to participate in this training.
The IRC’s Healing Classrooms approach—built on 40 years of education in emergencies experience and a decade of research and field testing—offers children a safe and predictable place to learn and cope with the consequences of conflict and displacement.
All of our training series are based on the Healing Classrooms principles and provide practical guidance and resources on how to apply them to the everyday school context.
The Healing Classrooms programme was launched in the UK in May 2022.
