How to become an IRC volunteer

The International Rescue Committee (IRC) in Arizona supports individuals from diverse backgrounds, including refugees, asylum seekers, survivors of domestic violence, human trafficking, and other crimes, as well as other vulnerable populations. Volunteers play a vital role in complementing staff efforts to provide comprehensive services to our clients.* 

To ensure client safety and comply with grant and contractual requirements, IRC Arizona has established guidelines for volunteer engagement based on supervision and access to confidential information. 

*Volunteers typically give between 2-5 hours of their time per week to help out IRC staff and/or clients. 

Clearance Requirements by Position Tier 

The Volunteer Coordinator will inform applicants of the level of clearance required for their role. Please do not let the cost deter you from volunteering—assistance may be available. 

Volunteers serving clients with and without staff present and all interns: 

  • Background Check ($20)
  • Fingerprint Clearance Card ($73)
  • Central Background Registry (Free) 

One-Time Volunteers (New Roots Days of Service, events, etc.): 
One-time volunteers typically serve at events with minimal or no client interaction. These roles only require a signed one-time volunteer waiver. 

Why Are Volunteers Asked to Cover Clearance Costs? 

As a nonprofit organization with limited resources, IRC prioritizes funding for refugee client needs. Most volunteers understand and are willing to cover these costs. The Level One Fingerprint Clearance Card is valid for six years and remains with you for future opportunities. 

If cost is a barrier, please inform us during your interview. We may be able to place you in a position that does not require certain clearances. 

Volunteer process

  1. Complete an application


    Submit the     volunteer application when you are ready to join IRC as a volunteer. Once submitted, your application will be reviewed by the appropriate staff member.

  2. Interview


    Meet with either the Volunteer & Outreach Coordinator, Development Coordinator, or relevant staff to discuss your interest, experience, alignment, skills, and the opportunities we currently have to ensure the best fit.

  3. Position determination


    The Volunteer & Outreach Coordinator or Development Coordinator will recommend a placement that aligns with your skills, interests, and availability, as well as IRC’s needs.

  4. Donation, Waivers, Background Checks, Fingerprint Card, etc.:
    After accepting a volunteer role, IRC asks all ongoing volunteers to: Donate $20 to offset the cost of background check

    Sign 3 waivers (Direct Service Position, Authorization for Release, and Volunteer Agreement)

    Complete the Centralized Background Check (CBC)

    Apply for a non-IVP Level One Fingerprint Clearance Card (if you do not already possess one that is unexpired)

    Submit to a background check through HireRight

  5. Start Date & Orientation


    Once your background check is complete and placement confirmed, you will attend an orientation covering office policies, confidentiality, and communication guidelines. Ongoing training opportunities will also be available.
