World Refugee Day is observed internationally on June 20th each year to honor the stories and contributions of refugees. With over 120 million displaced people worldwide, this day is designated by the United Nations in order to celebrate the strength of those who have been forced to flee their homes and begin new lives. The IRC works to restore health, safety, education, economic wellbeing, and power to people devastated by conflict and disaster in over 40 countries. Each World Refugee Day, the IRC calls on community members to stand up for refugees and show that they are welcome. This year, the Richmond Ivy lent a helping hand in supporting that cause.

To celebrate World Refugee Day this year, the IRC in Richmond partnered with the Richmond Ivy Soccer Club! Throughout the month of June, a portion of ticket sales from four Ivy home games went directly toward supporting IRC programs that assist newcomers as they rebuild their lives in the Richmond community. In addition to the financial support, we had the opportunity to share information about our services by tabling at home games and meeting with Ivy fans.

Our attendance provided a great opportunity for IRC staff and volunteers to engage with community members. While sharing in the excitement of 4 different games, we were able to promote available resources and have meaningful conversations. Opportunities such as this partnership play an extremely important role in making our various programs possible, and it is community support that allows the IRC to continue our vital work. We understand that fostering awareness, compassion, and connectivity within our community is more important than ever.

This year’s collaboration builds on a continued partnership with the Richmond Kickers Soccer Club. We are grateful to have been able to partner with the Richmond soccer community for the last two years and look forward to collaborating again next year.
