A New Chapter in Tallahassee

Today, Ramon is proudly employed at Capital City Bank in Tallahassee, Florida. Each morning, he greets customers with confidence and care, grateful for the stability, dignity, and purpose his job provides.

His position represents more than employment; it marks the fulfillment of a long-held dream to build a peaceful and meaningful life in the United States.

Leaving Cuba in Search of Freedom

Originally from Holguin, Cuba, Ramon faced political persecution that made everyday life uncertain and unsafe. For years, he dreamed of starting over somewhere he could live freely and work toward a better future.

That opportunity finally came when his resettlement case was approved, and he was welcomed by the International Rescue Committee (IRC) in Tallahassee.

“The IRC met me at the airport, brought me to an apartment that was ready for me, and made sure I had everything I needed,” Ramon recalls. “From the first day, they explained the process and helped me feel at home.”

Finding Stability Through the IRC

Through the IRC’s Matching Grant Program, Ramon received essential financial assistance and help finding his first job soon after his arrival in January.

He also joined the Financial Capabilities Program, where he worked closely with a financial coach to learn about budgeting, credit building, and responsible borrowing.

“With my coach, I created a budget, learned how to manage my money, and applied for a car loan,” he explains. “We talked about my goals, buying a car, improving my credit, and getting my academic degree recognized here in the U.S.”

Achieving Success and Independence

Within just five months of arriving, Ramon’s determination and discipline paid off. With guidance from IRC staff, he secured a new position at Capital City Bank, earning a higher income and building the foundation for a stable, independent future.

“Thanks to the IRC’s support, I not only have a job I love, but I also have my own car, a budget, and a plan for my future,” he says proudly. “The IRC didn’t just help me survive, they helped me build a life.”

Looking Ahead with Hope

Today, Ramon continues to stay connected with his IRC caseworker and financial coach as he works toward re-credentialing his degree and advancing in his career.

“It would have been very hard to start over without the IRC,” he reflects. “Their team was patient, kind, and always ready to help. Because of them, I’m standing on my own and looking ahead with hope.”
