Logar Afghanistan class shoot ECHO

The International Rescue Committee has partnered with Care About the Children Sweden and the European Union (EU) to implement a project that will increase access to safe education spaces for children aged 6-12 who are out of school in Bamiyan and Kunduz provinces of Afghanistan.

According to UNICEF, around 3.7 million children, 60% of whom are girls, are out of school and in need of education services in Afghanistan as a result of more than three decades of conflict. The provision of quality Education services in the country is impacted by poor infrastructure in schools, and lack of teaching and learning materials.

Together with school management and community committees, the initiative will identify areas that need infrastructure improvements in six formal schools and 90 temporary learning spaces in the two districts, like water and sanitation facilities for both boys and girls. It will also encourage parents, caregivers and community members to take children to school, and raise awareness on the importance of education for girls who are often married at an early age. The initiative will also support trained teachers to conduct literacy and numeracy lessons in the temporary learning spaces designed to support children transition to formal schools

This new initiative will complement an existing IRC-EU project that established temporary learning spaces for out of school children, and provided catch-up classes to children who were at high risk of dropping out among other services to the community.
