A Fresh Start in Tallahassee

Today, Milianny is building a stable and fulfilling life in Tallahassee with her family. She has found steady employment, is improving her English, and is focused on providing a strong foundation for her young son. Each day brings new progress—a reflection of how far she and her family have come since arriving in the United States with little more than determination and hope.

From Venezuela to the United States

Originally from Venezuela, Milianny earned her degree in Political Science from the University of Zulia. Before coming to the U.S., she lived in Colombia, where life remained uncertain and opportunities were limited.

When her family was selected for resettlement, they felt both relief and fear, unsure of what awaited them in a new country.

“When we were first selected for resettlement, we were afraid of the unknown and worried about whether we would be able to adjust to life in the United States,” Milianny recalls. “Thanks to this great organization, we were supported through every step of our transition.”

Finding Support Through the IRC

From the moment they arrived, the International Rescue Committee (IRC) in Tallahassee was there to welcome them. Through the Matching Grant Program, they received financial assistance, employment support, and case management services that helped them establish stability and independence.

“The IRC’s help was essential for us,” she says. “When we arrived, we had nothing. They gave us the tools we needed to start over, learn English, understand American culture, and begin working as soon as possible.”

Guided Every Step of the Way

With encouragement and guidance from her IRC caseworker, Alayna Williams, Milianny found her first job, allowing her to support her family and regain a sense of purpose.

“Alayna was kind, patient, and always available,” she shares. “Her support made it possible for us to reach our goals. She answered every question we had and guided us with care.”

Building a Stable Future

Now, Milianny and her husband are working toward long-term stability. They continue to build their financial foundation, improve their English, and plan for the future.

“Finding employment has been a major success for us,” Milianny says. “It has allowed us to support ourselves and take care of our family. Our goal is to keep growing emotionally and economically so our son can have a stable and happy future.”

Giving Back and Paying it Forward

Looking ahead, the family hopes to open a small business and eventually give back to the IRC, helping newly arrived families the same way they were helped.

“We are truly grateful for everything the IRC has done for us,” Milianny says. “They gave us more than assistance; they gave us hope and the chance to build a life we can be proud of.”
