Background: The International Rescue Committee (IRC) helps people whose lives and livelihoods are shattered by conflict and disaster to survive, recover and gain control of their future. IRC teams provide health, infrastructure, learning and economic support to people in 50+ countries worldwide. The IRC also provides support to thousands of refugees resettling in 29 U.S. cities each year through initial housing assistance; case management and referral services; job readiness and placement; community and cultural orientation; health and wellness programs; immigration services; and youth programs.
Scope of Work: IRC in Seattle’s Career Development Program advances economic mobility by supporting refugees, immigrants, and other economically vulnerable communities to transition from low-wage work into sustainable career pathways through education, training, and employment services. The Career Programs Intern will operate as a junior practitioner embedded within the Economic Empowerment team. Interns are expected to actively contribute to client outcomes, manage responsibilities with increasing independence, and demonstrate professional judgment in a fast-paced service environment.
Major Responsibilities
Direct Client Service
- Co-facilitate and progressively lead one-on-one career coaching sessions, supporting clients in setting and executing realistic, time-bound career goals.
- Contribute to the development and ongoing adjustment of individualized employment and training plans.
- Support clients through complex processes including higher education enrollment, credential evaluation, and vocational training navigation.
- Deliver targeted job readiness support (resume development, job search assistance, and interview preparation).
- Research and synthesize career pathway data, licensing requirements, and labor market trends to inform client advising.
Compliance
- Maintain accurate and timely case file documentation, including case notes and service tracking in databases.
- Translate client interactions into clear, outcome-oriented case notes that meet audit and reporting standards.
- Participate in case review, supervision, and program evaluation processes with preparation and attention to detail.
Time Commitment
- Minimum 10 hours per week during IRC office hours (Monday–Friday, 8:00 AM–5:00 PM)
- Regular schedule preferred but not required
- Minimum 4-month commitment
Internship Requirements
- Current enrollment in a Bachelor’s or Master’s program in Social Work (BSW/MSW) or a related field
- Strong interest in workforce development, economic empowerment, or refugee/immigrant services
- Strong written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills
- Ability to maintain confidentiality and professional boundaries
- Commitment to anti-racism, equity, and inclusion
Working Environment
- Hybrid work environment (primarily remote with in-person engagement as needed)
- Occasional travel within the service area for client meetings or outreach as needed
