Please Note: This is an unpaid position. The position is hybrid, with primarily remote work and in-person activities at IRC's Renton office as needed and occasional field work throughout the Greater Seattle Area.
SCOPE OF WORK: IRC in Seattle's Digital Equity & Access for Refugees program supports refugees and immigrants with limited English proficiency and beginner digital skills. The Digital Equity Intern will support practical, culturally responsive digital literacy services through tutoring, group classes, outreach, and program documentation. The role is hands-on and client-facing, with a focus on helping participants use essential online tools for healthcare, benefits, school, employment, communication, and internet safety.
Major Responsibilities
Digital Literacy Instruction and Client Support
• Co-facilitate one-on-one digital literacy tutoring sessions for refugee and immigrant clients.
• Support clients in setting realistic digital learning goals based on their current skill level, language needs, and daily life priorities.
• Provide step-by-step support on basic computer and smartphone use, email, internet navigation, online forms, and document uploads.
• Help clients practice using healthcare portals, public benefits websites, school communication systems, job search sites, and online applications.
• Reinforce internet safety topics including phishing awareness, privacy settings, secure passwords, scam prevention, and safe digital communication.
• Adapt instruction to participants with limited English proficiency, limited formal education, or limited prior exposure to technology.
• Collaborate with interpreters, bilingual staff, and community tutors to ensure services are accessible and culturally responsive.
Workshop and Curriculum Support
Assist with preparing, organizing, and facilitating group digital literacy classes and workshops.
• Help adapt digital skills curriculum, handouts, slides, and practice activities for beginner-level learners and English language learners.
• Support hands-on classroom activities that encourage peer learning, confidence building, and independent practice.
• Identify common client questions, barriers, and learning needs to help staff improve workshop content and tutoring materials.
Compliance and Program Support
• Maintain accurate and timely documentation of client participation, tutoring sessions, attendance, and service activities.
• Translate client interactions into clear, outcome-oriented case notes that meet program tracking and reporting standards.
• Support pre- and post-assessments, participant surveys, and learning goal tracking.
• Track client progress toward digital literacy goals and flag barriers, risks, or follow-up needs to staff proactively.
• Participate in supervision, team meetings, case review, and program evaluation activities with preparation and attention to detail.
Time Commitment
• Minimum 10 hours per week during IRC office hours (Monday-Friday, 8:00 AM-5:00 PM).
• Regular weekly schedule preferred to support consistent client tutoring and workshop preparation.
• Minimum 4-month commitment.
Internship Requirements
• Strong interest in digital equity, adult education, workforce development, refugee and immigrant services, or community-based technology access.
• Experience or training in teaching English as a second language strongly preferred but not required
• Demonstrated ability to work effectively and respectfully in multicultural and multilingual environments.
• Patience and comfort supporting adults with beginner-level technology skills.
• Strong written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills.
• Organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple tasks, follow through on details, and meet deadlines.
• Strong computer proficiency, including Microsoft Office, email, internet navigation, online forms, and virtual meeting platforms.
• Ability to maintain confidentiality, professional boundaries, and trauma-informed communication.

• Bilingual or multilingual ability is strongly preferred but not required.
Working Environment
• Hybrid work environment, primarily remote with in-person engagement as needed.
• In-person activities may include workshops, tutoring sessions, outreach events, laptop distribution events, or team collaboration at IRC's Renton office.
• Occasional travel within King, Snohomish, or Pierce County may be needed for outreach or client-facing activities.
