About the Program
The IRC in Silver Spring is seeking dedicated volunteer tutors to support multilingual, recently resettled students in grades 3–12 — fully online, one-on-one. Tutors lead structured, reading-based sessions using the RAZ Plus platform, focused primarily on English language development (ELD), with homework support as a secondary focus.
Virtual Tutoring Track (Grades 3–12): Fully online (Zoom), one-on-one sessions every Tuesday and Thursday, 4:45–6:00 PM.
Tutor Responsibilities:
- Meet with your assigned student twice weekly — Tuesdays and Thursdays, 4:45–6:00 PM — for structured, RAZ Plus reading-based sessions.
- Conduct the first-session assessment protocol to gauge your student's English proficiency and build rapport before moving into structured content.
- Deliver sessions from the provided ELD resources and lesson plans, matched to your student's assessed level.
- Complete the full tutor training cycle, including ELD training, before your first session.
- Communicate consistently with program staff about attendance, scheduling changes, and student progress.
- Commit to the full length of the program, October 6 – December 17.
Tutor Requirements:
- Volunteers must be at least 16 years of age. High school students may receive SSL hours for volunteering.
- Volunteers must read and sign the IRC Volunteer Agreement, acknowledging understanding of and agreement to follow all safeguarding guidelines and organizational policies.
- Volunteers must pass a background check in order to work with youth.
- Volunteers must participate in the youth tutor training to stay informed and aligned with program goals.
Training:
All tutors complete a virtual training cycle before their first session. You'll learn how to assess your student's English proficiency level and build a structured tutoring session around it, plus how to use the RAZ Plus platform and work effectively with multilingual newcomer students. Expected late September or early October — the exact date is being finalized and will be shared as it approaches.
How to Apply:
Apply for this opportunity here before September 22nd to be considered. The Youth Tutoring program begins October 6th.
