Description
- Teachers of Vocational English as a Second Language (VESL) classes, teach a small, intermediate-level English class consisting of lessons taught around the subject of employment. Teachers will instruct students in reading, writing, speaking and listening skills while the content helps prepare students to search for jobs, interview and begin working as soon as possible.
- Each week teachers are emailed a link to an online folder containing IRC announcements, reminders and lesson materials for the following week’s lessons. Lessons typically consist of a PowerPoint presentation introducing the concepts of the lesson along with worksheets for students to practice those concepts. Students complete worksheets with the full class, in groups/pairs or on their own during class time.

Some form of teaching experience is required, although it is not required to be in ESL. Leading a community group, corporate training experience, assisting in a classroom or working at a school or other educational institution may be substituted for teaching experience in some cases.

- Fluent in the English language, including reading/writing.
- Grasp of English language grammar.
- Associate degree required; bachelor’s degree is preferred.
- Basic computer skills, such as experience using Microsoft Office programs. This position reports to the Adult Education Coordinator or Education Team Manager.
- The Adult Education Coordinator will provide teacher training for online classes and support. She is always on duty in the office during morning classes to assist in-person teachers as well.
- Worksheets are copied for each class prior to class time and any other lesson materials are provided and ready for in-person teachers. The Adult Education Coordinator or one of the Classroom Assistants will assist teachers in uploading the teaching materials to the computer and projecting to the TV monitor each class day.
- Quarterly teacher and classroom assistants’ meetings - either online or in-person - will be held. Some type of teacher training is usually provided as part of these meetings. Teachers have plenty of time to raise any issues and ask questions at these meetings. However, they can arrange to meet with the Coordinator or Manager at any time. We are always here for our amazing teachers!
