TITLE: Youth Field Trip Support Volunteer 

LOCATION: El Cajon/ San Diego County 

START DATE: Ongoing   

DURATION: December 2021-June 2022, with potential to extend into summer 2022 

 

BACKGROUND: The International Rescue Committee (IRC) responds to the world’s worst humanitarian crises, helping to restore health, safety, education, economic wellbeing and power to people devastated by conflict and disaster. Founded in 1933 at the call of Albert Einstein, the IRC is at work in over 40 countries and 26 U.S. cities helping people to survive, reclaim control of their future and strengthen their communities. New this academic year, IRC San Diego is serving middle school refugee students in the Cajon Valley Unified School District. Students enrolled in the middle school program will engage in after-school clubs focused on social-emotional enrichment, leadership development, civic engagement and acculturation. Each month, students will have the opportunity to go on field trips to explore and learn more about their new home in San Diego.  

SCOPE OF WORK: Youth Field Trip Support Volunteers will support with chaperoning middle school students during field trips around San Diego County. Volunteers will support IRC Staff with logistics, group management and enforcing safety protocols. Volunteers will also engage with students and participate in activities as needed. Field trip transportation will be provided via school bus to and from each middle school. Volunteers will not be required to drive on behalf of the agency, but if interested, vetted volunteers who receive driving clearance may be asked to drive students home following field trips.

RESPONSIBILITIES:  

  • Supervise students on buses to destination and back to school campus in El Cajon 
  • Supervise students during field trip activities 
  • Engage with students during the field trip & participate in activities as needed 
  • Monitor the safety of students throughout field trip 
  • Always adhere to all IRC COVID-19 safety protocols 
  • Support IRC Youth Staff with various administrative tasks (for example, taking attendance, collecting field trip forms, setting up/cleaning up activities) during the field trip 
  • Sign up for field trip opportunities and communicate in advance if/when your availability changes 

 

TIME REQUIREMENTS: Most opportunities will occur on Mondays from 3:00 - 6:30pm. Some exceptions will include the occasional weekend events. Time and days are subject to change.  

 

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:  

  • Local to San Diego County with ability to get to school sites in El Cajon 
  • Be able to pass background check and Live Scan 
  • Adhere to all IRC COVID-19 safety protocols, including but not limited to wearing a face covering and social distancing 
  • Previous experience with youth and/or multicultural populations preferred 
  • Age 18+ 
  • (To drive) Have valid driver’s license and insurance 
  • (To drive) Have safe and ready to drive vehicle
